Maun is set on the southern edge of the Okavango Delta, astride the river which 'drains' the Delta, the Thamalakane River. Ever since it was founded in 1915, this dusty little town has been the start of wildlife expeditions. Now it is Botswana's 'safari capital' - the hub for flights and transfers into the wilderness.
Maun is also the administrative centre for northern and western Botswana. Its small centre is modern, with shops and office buildings, while its many 'suburbs' consist largely of traditionally built, thatched rondavels - whose mud walls are often peppered with old cans and bottles!
Most travellers only change planes at Maun airport; it's rare to spend more than a few hours here. However, Maun is a good place to get organised, and there are things to do if you stay for a night or two before or after a safari.
Most of our safaris to Botswana include a few hours in Maun, but the trips listed below have more time here, often including an over-night stop. Click below for details, dates and prices.
