This safari to Botswana is designed so that you can enjoy the Central Kalahari Game Reserve at its most productive time. Following the rains, large numbers of plains game and their young migrate to the fertile river valleys here, which in turn attracts predators to the area. The Okavango Delta offers a lush, almost tropical, contrast to the desert scenery.
Guide
The Okavango & Central Kalahari Safari is led by a highly skilled and qualified professional guide. He will be very knowledgeable on each area that you visit and will be able to name all the animals and birds you see as well as most of the plants, often adding tidbits of information that you'd never expected to discover.
Accommodation
Your accommodation in the Kalahari will be in a comfortable mobile camp, set up solely for your safari group. Accommodation will be in spacious 3 x 3 metre dome tents complete with a small veranda. The simply styled interior is made up of a bedside table, luggage benches and twin stretchers covered in cotton linen bed rolls with duvets and pillows. A zip-door at the rear of the tent leads through to you en suite, open-air bathroom where there is a short drop toilet and a bucket shower to be filled with warm water at your request. The camp has a separate communal toilet enclosure for use during the day. You will also be supplied with a 12v lamp and towels during your stay.
A 5 x 5 metre tent with metal and canvas camp chairs forms the main area and offers shade and shelter during the heat of the day or in the event of rain. Tasty, fresh meals are prepared over the camp fire by the chef and enjoyed at a table set with stainless-steel tableware under cover of the main tent or under the open night sky.
Whilst in Botswana's Okavango Delta you will stay in the lovely Xigera Camp, a permanent tented camp situated in a lush riverine forest in the heart of the Delta. The camp has ten large tented rooms each with an en-suite bathroom and outdoor shower. Raised on wooden platforms and walkways, each tent has good views of a seasonal floodplain and lagoon.
Vehicles
The Okavango & Central Kalahari Safari is conducted in a custom-built 4WD safari vehicle, usually a Land Rover or Land Cruiser. The interior is spacious and the lay out ensures that each guest has good game viewing visibility - only the rear is closed to lessen the dust entering the vehicle whilst driving. Large open window and roof areas also promote photographic opportunities which are usually numerous on such a camping safari. Canvas flaps can be rolled over these openings should you encounter seasonal rain whilst travelling.
Each vehicle has a fridge where cool drinks are kept. Whilst in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve camera batteries can be charged in the vehicle using a 12v cigarette lighter adaptor (you must supply your own adaptor). Whilst at Deception Valley Lodge and in the Okavango Delta camera batteries can be charged using the standard Botswana/South Africa 3 point round-pin plug.
