A walking safari in Botswana is a great way to experience the smaller things found in the African bush. When
walking in a big game area, it is imperative that the safari is led by a fully trained, professional walking
guide. This Bee-eater Safari combines walking with one of Botswana’s top guides, and game drives by
day and night. Spend time learning how to identify the different animal tracks and markings; study plants and
trees more closely, and to learn what eats them and whether they have medicinal properties for humans; or
simply watch a herd of buffalo graze quietly whilst you rest in the shade of a tree.

DETAILED ITINERARY:
Day 1 – Flight to Botswana
Your safari to Botswana begins with a scheduled overnight flight from London, via Johannesburg, to Maun: the
gateway to the Okavango Delta.
Day 2 – Maun
On arrival at Maun’s small but busy airport, you are met and driven to Motsentsela Tree Lodge to relax after your
flight. This delightful tented lodge is situated on a small private game farm on the outskirts of Maun: you could
choose to spend the afternoon by the pool or stroll around some of the property’s marked nature trails. The
reserve is home to game species including springbok, kudu, zebra and giraffe.
|
Day 3 & 4 – Khwai Community area (camp one)
After a leisurely breakfast at Motsentsela, you transfer back into Maun to meet your guide. Then you all set off
by vehicle for the Khwai area bordering the Okavango Delta.
This is one of the few areas in Botswana where rhinoceros are found, and it also boasts good predator
populations. The Khwai River is the focal point for most of the wildlife here. You will spend your first day
exploring the area by walking and by day and night drives; activities possible as you are in a community area and
not a national park.
|
 |
Because the Khwai Community Area is community run project, profits from tourism there go directly to help the
Khwai Community Trust.
Day 5, 6 & 7 – Khwai Community area (camp two)
The transfer between Khwai Camps One and Two consists of a full day’s walk between the two, for a close-up
experience of the surroundings. The middle of the day is spent resting and having a leisurely picnic lunch under
the shade of the woodland trees. The walks are not strenuous and care is taken to make sure everyone is
comfortable with the pace. Should anyone not want to continue on foot, there are radio communications with the
base camp and a vehicle will pick you up and transport you to the camp.
|
 |
Walking allows you to hear the tiny sounds that the engine of a vehicle would drown: the rustle of a lizard, the
hum of an insect or the cracking of a twig under the weight of some small rodent. You can smell the mixed scents
and fragrances of the vegetation around you, and feel the textures of the plants.
Your luggage will be transported by vehicle, so all you need to carry is a small day pack for your water, camera
and binoculars. Please remember to bring a hat!
|
The Khwai is well known for its elephant and leopard populations, and for birders there are few better areas in
Africa for viewing raptors. Time your activity over the next two days as the animals do: up early in the morning
to seek out your quarry, and then siesta during the heat of the day before resuming activity in the afternoon.
Day 8 – Flight to London
After breakfast we leave camp and drive to Maun in time for you to catch your homeward flight to the UK.
Day 9 – Arrive in London
