Age of travellers: min 12 / max 100 years old

Family groups with children under the age of 12 years can book the Namibia Desert Lion Safari on a private basis. Speak to us about available dates. There is no maximum age limit. However, travellers need to be reasonably fit as it is a hands-on experience even though long walks are unlikely.

Desert Lion Project

Read more about Namibia's unique desert lions and the researchers and specialists like Dr Flip Stander who devote their time to ensuring the survival of this magnificent species.

Joining the safari

The Namibia Desert Lion Safari can easily be arranged as a stand-alone safari; in combination with another small-group Namibia safari or as an add-on to a self-drive or fly-in trip around Namibia. Speak to us for details.

Language

The Namibia Desert Lion Safari will be led in English.

Costs

The cost of the safari includes scheduled flights from the UK, pre and post safari accommodation in Swakopmund, transfers to and from Wereldsend base camp, safari transport in a 4WD vehicle, camping equipment, activities, three meals on most days, additional snacks and refreshments, the services of a professional guide and time with wildlife expert - Dr Flip Stander.

Drinks

Whilst on safari a selection of mineral water and soft drinks are included during the day. In the evenings wine, beer and a selection of spirits are provided.

Luggage

We request that you try to keep your luggage to a maximum of 20kg per person. This doesn't include a small day or camera bag. Items should all be packed into soft squashable bags as large rigid suitcases are very unwieldy and difficult to store into the safari vehicle. We advise that you travel with a bag that is relatively dustproof so that your clothes remain dust free in Namibia's desert environment.

Laundry

It is not possible to do laundry on this short safari. Much of the time will be spent in remote desert areas where water is a sought after commodity and used sparingly.

Torches

Although an LED lantern will be supplied in each tent, we strongly recommend that you also take with you a good head torch which will help you if you need to go to the bathroom, read a book or catch up with your safari journal during the night. We suggest you spend a little money on this essential safari item to avoid a lot of potential frustration in the bush.

Special requests

If you have any dietary requirements, special requests or medical conditions that you would like us to be aware of we ask that you tell us well in advance. Whilst we cannot always guarantee a special request, the safari operator will always try hard to help.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory. However, if you want to tip because you have received good service, we recommend a discretionary UK Sterling GBP 3-5 per person per day for your safari guide and UK Sterling GBP 2 per person per day for the camp team. The latter should be placed in the communal tipping envelope kept by the guide to be distributed equally amongst all the staff.

Donations

For each Namibia Desert Lion Safari a donation is made to the Desert Lion Conservation project by the safari operator.

It is possible for travellers to make additional donations to the project should they wish to. Dr Flip Stander and the project team are always in need of specific items and equipment and they keep a list of these on their website. This is where you will also find details of how to best send your donations.

Passport and Visa requirements

It is always your responsibility to get the latest passport and immigration requirements for the countries you will visit or transit through on your holiday from the embassy closest to you. Our current understanding is that travellers on British, American, Australian and New Zealand passports do not require a visa for South Africa or Namibia. However, it is essential that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of departure and that you have at least 3 blank pages in your passport for immigration stamps.
