This safari is a combination of a safari that takes you through Namibia's scenic south, focusing on the
country's spectacular landscapes, and a second, shorter safari to Etosha National Park where you will
marvel at the abundant game. You'll reach some of the great mountain areas via a remote and beautiful road
alongside the Orange River before following the escarpment north to the unique Namib Desert.
Experience a range of desert and semi-desert areas when you visit the Sperrgebiet and Namib-Naukluft
Park. Explore Windhoek and its townships, visit historic Lüderitz and spend time in a Nama
village.

DETAILED ITINERARY:
Day 1 - Flight to Namibia
Scheduled overnight flight from London Gatwick to Windhoek with Air Namibia.
Day 2 - Windhoek
On arrival in Windhoek for the beginning of your Namibian safari, you are transferred to a comfortable
guesthouse. The afternoon is free: relax by the pool, or wander into town to explore. Dinner is at your own
expense as there are plenty of good restaurants to choose from. Alternatively, you can order at the guesthouse.
You will find your hosts there helpful and friendly, and our Namibian team is easily contactable and happy to
answer any queries you might have.
Day 3 - Quiver Tree Forest
After breakfast, your guide collects you between 07.30 and 08.00 for the longest drive of the trip. You head
south, over the Tropic of Capricorn, stopping for lunch near a Nama village. The Nama people speak a Khoisan
language (with clicks!), and your guide will introduce you sensitively to their lifestyle and traditions. One of
the elders often talks about the community's history, and sometimes you may be treated to a short play or an
impromptu concert by the church choir. Arts and crafts made by the villagers are available and, because everyone
benefits from your visit, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. After lunch, drive south to camp amidst
spiky tree aloes at the Quiver Tree Forest.
Day 4 - Orange River
Continuing south, after a short pause at the town of Keetmanshoop to stock up on provisions you stop at the great
Fish River Canyon (probably the world's second largest of its kind, after Arizona's Grand Canyon). Take a walk
along the rim to get the best views while trying to imagine the millions of years it took for the forces of
erosion to carve out this magnificent ravine. In the afternoon, continue south to a remote and beautiful road
beside the Orange River, where you camp in a very tranquil setting by the river bank.
Day 5 - Aus
After breakfast by the river and the chance for a quick dip, you follow the road over the southern escarpment
towards the desert. The route takes you past the isolated outposts of Rosh Pinah and Skorpion, to the small
hillside town of Aus. Here you camp for two nights at a stunning spot on the edge of the escarpment. The
energetic may stretch their legs and climb to view the setting sun over the Namib's vast Koichab Pan, before
returning to the fold for dinner.
|
 |
Day 6 - Luderitz/Aus
After an early start, driving alongside the Sperrgebiet (the forbidden diamond-mining zone) and across your
first sand dunes, you reach the fascinating old German town of Lüderitz with its attractive architecture and
pastel houses. Once there, you may opt to take an excellent boat cruise (about £20) on the old schooner
Sedina, in search of the ocean's rich bird and marine life (including African penguins and heaviside
dolphins). Later visit Kolmanskop, a deserted boomtown from the early 20th century that is slowly being
swallowed by the desert. You are free to sample Lüderitz's famous seafood for lunch, before an afternoon
trip to explore the peninsula and the historic Diaz Point. Driving back to your camp, you usually stop to
see the amazing wild horses that live along with oryx in the Namib.
|
Day 7 - Namib-Naukluft Park
Today you head north along the edge of the Namib Desert: this is one of the country's most spectacular
drives, with fabulous vistas at every turn. You aim to arrive at your campsite on the edge of the desert
during the late afternoon, and after setting up camp, there is time to relax with a sundowner whilst you
watch the sun set - the perfect ending to another great day on safari in Namibia.
Day 8 - Namib-Naukluft Park
Rising well before dawn, you drive deep into the desert, home to some of the world's highest dunes and
stunning scenery. The shifting, contrasting patterns of light and shadow on these dunes are always
enthralling, and the view from the top is spectacular. After breakfast in the desert you continue through
breathtaking scenery to some of the world's highest dunes at Sossusvlei. Spend the morning exploring these,
marvelling at the surroundings and the wildlife. After lunch at Sesriem, you've time to relax during the
heat of the day before heading to nearby Sesriem Canyon, where the force of the ephemeral Tsauchab River has
sculpted amazing shapes from the rock.
Day 9 - Windhoek
Driving back to Windhoek, you pass through yet more stunning scenery as the road climbs up and over the
escarpment. You arrive back at your guesthouse around 16.00 and your evening is free, although the group and
guide often arrange to meet up for dinner.
Day 10 - Windhoek / Township Tour
After breakfast, between 08.45 and 09.00, you are collected for a trip to Katutura, one of Windhoek's large,
vibrant townships. Each visit is different, but you usually have a chance to visit the market and sample some
of the local food and drink, see a successful local craft project run by (and for) local women, and perhaps
enjoy some traditional singing and dancing in the shanty area known as Babylon. The tour lasts about three
hours, usually ending at the Namibia Craft Centre in the centre of Windhoek. From there you can continue to
explore the city, or return to your guesthouse to relax.
Day 11 - Etosha National Park
Your guide will collect you between 08.00 and 08.30 for the drive north and the second part of your Namibian
safari. You travel through the towns of Otjiwarongo and Outjo, to your campsite in south western region of
Etosha National Park. In the afternoon you have your first game drive in the park, often just enjoying
watching the many animals that stay near the waterholes. You finally return to camp just before sunset for a
cool drink and tasty fireside dinner.
|
 |
Day 12 - Etosha National Park
After breaking camp, you head slowly east through this stark but beautiful park, with some spectacular views
of the silvery expanse of Etosha Pan. This is one of the continent's best game reserves, home to large
populations of superb wildlife. Elephant and many species of plains' game are strong here, especially
springbok, gemsbok, zebra and giraffe. There's a large lion population, and leopard, cheetah and spotted
hyena are common. You stop for an unhurried lunch at Halali in the centre of the park before arriving at
your campsite on the park's eastern boundaries in the late afternoon.
|
Day 13 - Windhoek
After a leisurely breakfast you head southwards, and break your journey with a visit to Okahandja. Local
artisans come here from all over Namibia to sell their crafts, as the small town is home to the country's
largest and best craft market. You arrive back at your guesthouse by late afternoon. Your evening is free,
but the group and their guide often arrange to meet for a farewell meal together.
Day 14 - Flight to London
On the last day of your Namibian safari you have free to explore Windhoek before you are collected from your
guesthouse and driven to the airport in time to depart on your scheduled flight to London.
Day 15 - Arrive in London
