  Owl Safaris
In contrast to the constant comings and goings of a fly-in safari to lodges in Botswana, a mobile camping safari offers you a welcome sense of continuity, and the opportunity to get to know your guide and fellow travelling companions, thus enhancing your experience. Each of the Owl Safaris is led by a team of dedicated and experienced individuals – a professional guide, safari chef and camp staff.

Every guide is passionate about the bush and will draw from a lifetime of experience to enlighten, fascinate and entertain you throughout your safari. Not only do they have extensive knowledge of Botswana’s flora and fauna, but they are also fully trained walking guides; so the opportunity to take guided walks with them can be a highlight of your holiday to Botswana.

The Scops Owl Safari and Pel’s Fishing Owl Safari visit Botswana’s favourite wildlife areas including the Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai River. The former begins and ends in Maun, whilst the latter goes on to explore Savuti and Chobe National Park. The Pel’s Fishing Owl Safari may begin in Maun and end at the mighty Victoria Falls or travel in reverse, beginning in Livingstone (Zambia) and finishing in Maun. Take a look at the listed departure dates for more details on this.

The Pearl-spotted Owl Safari offers a real contrast between the lush Okavango Delta environments and the vast, dry whiteness of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Combine the excitement of spotting big game from your open 4WD safari vehicle with searching out star constellations in seemingly endless skies and exploring archaeological sites. This safari only has departures during December and March when the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Makgadikgadi are at their most productive.

Botswana is especially fortunate in that the Hospitality and Tourism Association (HATAB), in conjunction with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, has set aside private wilderness sites for the exclusive use of licensed mobile operators, ensuring that travellers have a truly exclusive bush experience. The private mobile tented camps set up on these sites are fully serviced and comfortable and you are sure to enjoy outstanding service and personal attention.

You will be accommodated in spacious 3 x 3 metre walk-in safari tents with large breezy windows and a shaded veranda. Each is furnished with two single camp beds, complete with comfortable mattresses, duvets and pillows, a bedside table, small carpet and battery powered lamp. A private en-suite bathroom includes a hot-water bucket shower, flush chemical toilet and hand basin. Quality bed and bath linen, soap, insect repellent and a torch are also provided. Towels are included.

Wash basin
The central area is set out in the open, taking full advantage of the natural surroundings, and is furnished with a dining table, director’s chairs and drinks table. During your safari, drinks such as mineral water, soft drinks, gin, beer and wine are included. If you have a preferred tipple that is not included in this list we can take requests and for a nominal fee, ensure that there is plenty to last the trip.

Table laid for dinner The safari chef prepares all meals with fresh ingredients and bakes fresh bread daily. Sumptuous three-course bush dinners, guaranteed to satisfy any appetite, are served in style at a beautifully laid table and accompanied by fine South African wines.

The custom-made safari vehicles used on these safaris are spacious and comfortable, seating a maximum of nine passengers. The canvas sides roll away to create an almost uninterrupted view of the bush, and each traveller is guaranteed a window seat, ensuring the best possible game-viewing experience. The vehicles are equipped with HF radios for 24-hour communication with the Maun base.

Game drives are the primary activity on these safaris. Other activities include a boat cruise in the Okavango Delta, guided walks and night game drives in designated areas and a cruise on the Chobe River.

There is no single supplement on these safaris. As only a limited number of tents are available, single travellers may be paired with another person of the same sex. Each of the Owl Safaris requires a minimum of two passengers to run. If you are a solo traveller, contact us to find out if others have already booked on the safari you wish to join.

For practical reasons, Owl Safaris have a minimum age limit of 10 years. There is no maximum age limit. The safaris require a minimum of two passengers to run.

A basic laundry service is included on request. Your clothes would be washed but not pressed or ironed.

On the Scops Owl Safari, the light-aircraft transfers from Maun to the Okavango Delta are charter flights, and the luggage limit is 12kg per person including reasonable camera equipment. All luggage must be packed in soft squashable bags. This is seldom a problem as light, casual clothing is all that is needed except in the winter months (June to August) when at least one warm jacket or fleece is recommended. If require a higher luggage limit for additional specialised camera equipment talk to us, as for an extra charge we may be able to organise this for you.
