  Stork Safaris
The Stork Safaris are luxurious mobile camping safaris to Botswana offering adventure in lavish comfort. Your guides will be some of the most highly qualified professional guides and most experienced naturalists in Botswana.

Botswana offers a fantastic and almost exclusive safari experience, but there is often a price tag to match. To make the Marabou Stork Safari more affordable, we have created a few scheduled departure dates in 2008. The only snag with this is that we’ve only been able to arrange a few departures, so book early!

If you want a more exclusive safari, travelling with a small group of family or friends, then the Marabou Stork Safari or Saddle-billed Stork Safari can be organised on a departure date of your choice. We have included a guide as to what this would cost your group. Talk to us, at Wild about Africa, for more information on possible departure dates.

Whilst on a Stork Safari you will stay in tented mobile camps that offer comfortable, twin-bedded accommodation in spacious, insect-proof Meru-style tents which measure 6 x 6 metres. The bucket shower and toilet en suite bathrooms, which are also insect proof and are roofed, are permanently attached to the tents.

In every tent you will find a battery-operated lamp, torch, insect repellent, floor rugs, towels and toiletries, including soap and shampoos. Your veranda has comfortable canvas chairs for you to relax in during the heat of the day.

Outside the tents are canvas wash basins which are filled with hot water first thing in the morning and when you return from dusty game drives. There is also a mirror and hanging canvas ‘bathroom cupboard’ for your toilet items.

On Day 6 of the safaris you spend a night ‘fly camping’ on an idyllic island in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Your island accommodation will be much more rustic with twin camp beds set up in 3m x 3m canvas dome tents. Private canvas hand basins are set up outside each tent. There are separate enclosures each with a bucket shower that is filled with water at your chosen temperature when needed, and an enclosure with a ‘bush’ toilet. Each shower enclosure and toilet will be shared by two tents, or four people.

The mobile camps are dismantled and moved after each stay by the back-up crew and set up again at the next destination while you are still driving or flying between the locations in Botswana, so that you arrive to find your new camp ready and with all the facilities in place. This system allows you to enjoy a safari in the manner of the early explorers – except that you are in comfortable luxury and don’t have to do any of the work! Also no time is wasted in travel, because your leisurely transfer doubles as a game drive or a scenic flight.

The members of the experienced camp staff are available throughout the day to attend to your every need and ensure your comfort at all times. You will not be expected to participate in any camp duties, allowing for complete relaxation.

As you wake to your tranquil surroundings in the early morning, wash basins filled with hot water are placed outside your tents; and then you gather for a light breakfast before embarking on a new day of adventure. On returning to the camp after your morning activity, you will be treated to an excellent brunch, after which there is time for relaxation. Afternoon tea and a further activity are followed by cold drinks and snacks around the campfire, and then a delicious dinner. Three-course meals are taken in a separate dining tent on a fully laid out table. The camp team pride themselves on offering you delicious cuisine.

A stork safari camp scene After dinner, the traditional campfire surrounded by comfortable canvas chairs makes for a great evening spot to talk over the day’s adventures, swap travellers’ tales, and enjoy a selection of delicious drinks before sinking into your comfortable bed.

These safaris are conducted in open 4WD Landcruisers. For your safety and comfort, these have been custom-built by specialists in safari vehicle modifications. Each vehicle is canopied, seats a maximum of eight passengers and is fitted with padded individual bucket seats. Snacks and ice-cold drinks are available on all drives.
At the Botswana mobile camps a complimentary bar is included (excluding premium brands). Whilst staying at lodges and hotels the system varies: some include drinks, others will add them to a bar bill which is payable by you on departure.

A laundry service is included whilst on safari for all clothing items except for smalls. Washing powder and a basin can be made available to you whenever you might need it.

For practical reasons, the minimum age for Stork Safaris is 10 years. It is possible to arrange a private guided safari for a group of family or friends where children from the age of 6 can travel. To find out more about this option, talk to us at Wild about Africa. Each of the Stork Safaris requires a minimum of four passengers to run. If you are a solo traveller or part of a couple, contact us to find out if others have already booked on the safari you wish to join.

On both our Stork Safaris, the light-aircraft transfers from Maun to the Okavango Delta are charter flights, and the luggage limit is 20kg per person including reasonable camera equipment. All luggage must be packed in soft squashable bags. This is seldom a problem as light, casual clothing is all that is needed except in the winter months (June - August) when at least one warm jacket or fleece is recommended. If require a higher luggage limit for additional specialised camera equipment talk to us, as for an extra charge we may be able to organise this for you.
