Safaris to Tarangire National Park

The 2,850km2 Tarangire National Park is one of the less-visited parks of Tanzania's 'northern circuit' - somewhat unjustifiably. At the right time of year, the game viewing can be excellent: large numbers of wildlife converge on the park in the dry season (from around June to October) to drink from the permanent waters of the Tarangire River.

The river dominates the north side of the park, flowing out into Lake Burungi in the northwest corner. In the south of Tanzania's Tarangire National Park you can find a series of large swamps which turn into vast green plains during the dry season - great areas for wildlife viewing whilst on a comfortable or luxury camping safari here.

The dry and open woodlands of the park are covered in baobab trees, as well as some beautiful flat-topped acacia trees - iconic images of an African safari. Over 500 species of birds have been recorded throughout the Tarangire Park, making it a haven for bird lovers.

At certain times hundreds of elephants congregate along the banks of the rivers, while large herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and giraffe are also commonly sighted. The relatively untouristy nature of the place allows for a real feeling of being out in the wilderness whilst on your Tanzania camping safari which you aren't always able to achieve in some of the other parks.
