Safaris which visit Maun in Botswana
Maun is set on the southern edge of the vast Okavango Delta, astride the river which 'drains' the Delta, the Thamalakane River. Ever since it was founded in 1915, this dusty little town has been the starting point of wildlife safari expeditions. Now it is Botswana's 'safari capital' - the hub for flights and transfers into the wilderness.
Maun is also the administrative centre for northern and western Botswana. Its small centre is modern, with shops and office buildings, while it's spread out hodge-podge of suburbs consist largely of traditionally built, thatched rondavels - whose mud walls are often peppered with old recycled cans and bottles!
Most travellers only change planes at Maun airport; it's rare to spend more than a few hours here. However, Maun is a good place to relax after a long flight; to get organised; or to get a taste of rural Botswana life on visits to one of the village areas or by turning your hand tasks such as basket weaving.
Some our comfortable camping and luxury tented safaris to Botswana include very short stopovers in Maun, whilst others include an over-night stop. Longer stays can be arranged on request.
